Millie Morris, a UC Santa Barbara professor and female-serial-killer expert, has always been one of the guys. She and her four best guy friends—all fellow professors—are perpetually single. When a university function becomes a black-tie gala, the group makes a pact to join an online dating service to find plus-ones for the event. Before the pact takes effect, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, spend an intimate half-night together but mutually agree to keep their friendship platonic. However, when Millie attempts online dating, her profile attracts only unwanted attention. She creates a fictional persona called "Catherine," through whom she can be more vulnerable than she allows herself to be in person. When Catherine and Reid begin a digital correspondence, Millie finds herself caught between her online and real-life worlds. She must confront her fear of intimacy or risk losing her best friend permanently.
