Perfect for you if...

  • You love horror that swings between genuine scares and social commentary, especially stories grounded in real trauma.
  • You're drawn to unreliable narrators with encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture who see the world through a fractured, brilliant lens.
  • You want to read Indigenous writers tackling colonialism, displacement, and gentrification without preaching.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward slasher plots without philosophical weight or metafictional games.
  • You need a protagonist you immediately root for rather than one you gradually understand and come to love.
  • You're looking for a contained mystery where the killer's identity is the main suspense.

About this book

My Heart Is a Chainsaw is the first novel in The Indian Lake trilogy by Stephen Graham Jones. Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel, the book combines elements of slasher films with a story of murder in small-town America. Jade Daniels is an angry, half-Indian outcast living with an abusive father and an absent mother in a town that rejects her. She copes with her difficult life through horror movies, particularly those featuring masked killers seeking revenge. When murders begin occurring in Indian Lake, Jade narrates the town's history as if it were one of these films, predicting how events will unfold. Beneath the surface narrative lies a critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification. The novel presents a portrait of a traumatized young girl who uses horror as a lens to understand her world—a girl whose emotions are too large for her circumstances, who loves fiercely and desperately seeks a home.
