Only Human: A Divine Comedy reimagines the biblical story of Abraham and Sarah as a love triangle involving God. After previous attempts with Adam and Noah proved unsatisfactory, God decides to choose a third vessel through whom to direct human affairs and communicate His will directly. He selects a solitary figure whose trust must be earned, believing that once secured, this person will reflect greater glory and love. However, God discovers that his chosen person is not truly solitary—Abraham is married to Sarah. The bonds between husband and wife prove resilient even against divine command. Diski transforms the archetypal Old Testament narrative of obedience into a conflict of wills, where the stakes extend beyond humanity's future to include who will control the telling of its past.
