Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy crime procedurals with a protagonist who's witty and flawed, not just a stoic action hero.
  • You like mysteries rooted in specific places, where setting and history become part of the puzzle.
  • You want a thriller that balances tension with humour and doesn't take itself entirely seriously.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer standalone mysteries without plans for sequels, as this launches a series.
  • You're looking for relentless, non-stop action. There's atmospheric downtime here.
  • You need diverse representation in your crime fiction. The cast skews traditional.

About this book

Recovering from a line-of-duty injury, NYPD homicide detective John Corey stays in Southold, a Long Island township populated by farmers and fishermen. When Tom and Judy Gordon, a young couple Corey knows, are found dead on their patio with gunshot wounds, local police chief Sylvester Maxwell asks for Corey's expertise. Corey's investigation into the murders draws him into the history, legends, and secrets of northern Long Island, uncovering dangers he did not anticipate. Along the way, he encounters Detective Beth Penrose and Emma Whitestone, a Mayflower descendant, both of whom significantly affect his life. Through solving the case, Corey gains insight into himself. The novel features fast-paced storytelling, atmospheric detail, distinctive characters, and comic elements.
