Nick Corey is the sheriff of tiny Potts County, and he deliberately neglects his duties. He doesn't solve problems, enforce rules, or arrest criminals, knowing that the locals have no real interest in following the law. He spends his time eating five meals a day, sleeping, and pursuing eligible women. However, Nick faces mounting complications. Two local pimps are challenging his authority and damaging his reputation. His girlfriend Rose is being terrorized by her husband. Additionally, his wife and her brother Lenny are creating stress in his life, and their closeness raises questions. With an election approaching, Nick must address these problems quickly—he is determined to remain sheriff at any cost. Despite his apparent incompetence, Nick Corey is far more intelligent than he appears. Pop. 1280 is regarded as a classic of mid-twentieth century crime fiction. The novel explores themes of lust, murder, and betrayal in the Deep South and served as the basis for the French film Coup de Torchon.
