About this book

This monograph documents research on a prototype Multi-Spiked Connecting Scaffold (MSC-Scaffold) designed for cementless fixation in a new generation of resurfacing arthroplasty endoprostheses. Developed by a bioengineering-surgical team from three Polish universities, the research encompasses bioengineering design, rapid prototyping, selective laser melting manufacturing, functionalization, surface modification, numerical studies, in vitro experiments, and pilot surgical trials in animal models. The work presents the first worldwide biomimetic fixation design for resurfacing endoprostheses of the knee and hip. It details the complete bioengineering design process, scaffold prototyping and SLM manufacturing results, structural and osteoconductive functionalization, surface modification, mechanical behavior investigations of the scaffold-bone system, cell culture studies, and pilot surgical experiments in animal models. Intended for professionals and graduate students in biomedical engineering, biomaterials engineering, and bone and joint surgery.
