About this book

This novel was inspired by the real-life story of Ed Gein, a psychotic murderer who led a dual life. Alfred Hitchcock adapted the book into a classic film the year after its release. Norman Bates lives with his mother in an old house on a hill above the Bates motel. Though she has been dead for twenty years according to others, Norman knows better. When a beautiful woman checks into the motel, Norman spies on her as she undresses. His mother appears to protect him from what she sees as his filthy thoughts—armed with a butcher knife.
