Perfect for you if...

  • You appreciate prose that's gorgeous but unsentimental, and you're drawn to morally compromised characters who don't realise how selfish they are.
  • You want to understand the American male psyche in the 1950s, before the cultural revisions and without nostalgia.
  • You enjoy character studies where the internal logic of a flawed person becomes strangely compelling, even when you disagree with every choice he makes.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need your protagonists to be likeable or to grow meaningfully. Rabbit learns nothing and wants none of the things he claims to want.
  • You find misogyny in fiction difficult to sit with, even when it's clearly intentional critique. Updike's women exist largely in relation to Rabbit's appetites.
  • You prefer plot-driven narratives. This is a psychological spiral masquerading as a novel of action.

About this book

Rabbit, Run established John Updike as a major American novelist. The novel follows Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a twenty-six-year-old former high-school basketball star who impulsively abandons his wife and son. Caught between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual gratification and family duty, Rabbit is a man-child struggling with competing desires. Though his departure from home involves evasion and zigzagging choices, he maintains faith that he is following the right path—an invisible line toward his own salvation as straight as a ruler's edge. The story examines themes of loss and seeking, exploring the tension between human hard-heartedness and divine Grace. Updike's prose is charged with emotion while remaining under careful control.
