Perfect for you if...

  • You want narrative nonfiction that reads like a novel but feels urgent and true, with characters you'll think about long after finishing.
  • You're interested in how systemic poverty, incarceration, and the drug trade actually reshape lives across generations, told through real people rather than policy.
  • You appreciate deeply reported books that take years to complete and show the author's genuine care for her subjects, like Matthew Desmond's Evicted.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer light reads or books that wrap up neatly. This is a decade-long chronicle of struggle with no easy resolutions.
  • You want an argument about policy or a manifesto. LeBlanc lets the story speak; she doesn't preach.
  • You're looking for uplifting survival stories. This is unflinching about loss, addiction, and cycles that repeat despite everyone's best efforts.

About this book

Set during the War on Drugs, this book is a chronicle of one family's experiences in the South Bronx during the 1990s. Journalist Adrian Nicole LeBlanc began her reporting in 1989 when she met Jessica, a young mother whose life was about to be altered by the criminal justice system. This encounter led LeBlanc to move beyond typical crime narratives and instead document the lives of women and children affected by poverty. The book follows Jessica, her family, and her circle of friends through their daily struggles and moments of hope. LeBlanc traces three generations as they navigate the tension between hope and deprivation. Rather than relying on statistics, the work presents an intimate account of how families form and sustain themselves, told through the interconnected stories of real people living through this period in American history.
