Perfect for you if...

  • You worry that your family dinners have become people hunched over phones and want concrete ways to rebuild actual connection.
  • You're a manager or team leader noticing that remote work and Slack have replaced the messy, creative conversations that actually move projects forward.
  • You've felt the difference between texting with someone and sitting across from them, and you want to understand why one has become so much easier than the other.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a how-to guide with step-by-step tactics. This is diagnosis and argument, not a workbook.
  • You're convinced technology is neutral and that the problem is just how people use it. Turkle's position will feel preachy to you.
  • You don't have much patience for nuance on digital culture. You want someone to either defend tech fully or condemn it entirely.

About this book

Sherry Turkle investigates how reduced face-to-face conversation undermines relationships, creativity, and productivity in our digital age, and argues for reclaiming talk as essential to human connection. Despite constant technological communication, we have replaced meaningful conversation with superficial connection. Turkle, who has studied digital culture for over thirty years, examines how we avoid conversation across work, home, politics, and relationships through texts and emails that require no vulnerability or full presence. She documents specific consequences: families distracted by phones at dinner, friends managing phone-divided conversations, workplaces losing productivity and commitment through screen retreat, and online spaces where people only engage with agreeable opinions rather than genuine public debate. Turkle argues that internal conversation and solitude are endangered as constant connectivity frames loneliness as a problem technology should solve. This undermines empathy and relationship capacity. She contends that conversation is foundational to democracy, business success, and personal development of empathy, friendship, love, and learning. Based on five years of research and interviews in homes, schools, and workplaces, Turkle concludes we are resilient and better positioned to understand technology's limits. She argues the time is right to reclaim conversation—our most basic and humanizing technology—as the response to modern challenges.
