A New York Times Notable Book, this historical drama follows Dr. Robert Judson Cole from his homeland in Scotland through Boston's medical establishments to the frontier cabins of Illinois in the nineteenth century. In the wilderness, Cole befriends members of the Sauk tribe who have fled their reservation and learns native remedies that complement his classical medical training from Edinburgh University. Cole marries a settler woman he had treated for illness. The narrative traces how their deaf son also becomes a physician despite his disability, and follows the Cole family through their involvement in the Civil War and its aftermath.
