In the wilderness, Cole befriends members of the Sauk tribe who have fled their reservation and learns native remedies that complement his classical medical training from Edinburgh University. Cole marries a settler woman he had treated for illness. The narrative traces how their deaf son also becomes a physician despite his disability, and follows the Cole family through their involvement in the Civil War and its aftermath.
