Ben Shattuck retraces six walks taken by Henry David Thoreau across New England. Beginning in autumn on Cape Cod's outer beaches—the same journey Thoreau made in 1849—Shattuck carries only bread, cheese, and a notebook as he travels from the elbow of the Cape to Provincetown. He then follows Thoreau's other routes: up Mount Katahdin and Mount Wachusett, along his hometown coastline, and through the Allagash. Across these journeys, Shattuck encounters unexpected people, landscapes, and stories while experiencing the restorative effects of walking.
