Perfect for you if...

  • You're tired of grinding away at a job that doesn't fulfil you and need permission to try something completely different.
  • You love quiet, character-driven stories about ordinary people building something real with their hands.
  • You appreciate gentle humour and the kind of book that feels like a warm conversation with someone who gets it.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for plot twists, high stakes, or dramatic conflict. This book moves at the pace of bread rising.
  • You find food writing precious or novels that romanticise artisanal living a bit too much.
  • You want a book that tackles the tech industry's darker sides. This one's more interested in escape than critique.

About this book

Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company. She works long hours with minimal social interaction, relying on dinner deliveries from a neighborhood restaurant run by two brothers. When visa issues force the brothers to close their shop, they leave Lois with their sourdough starter—a living culture she must maintain by feeding daily and playing music for it. With no baking experience, Lois begins learning to bake with the starter. She soon produces enough bread to supply the General Dexterity cafeteria daily. Encouraged by the company chef, she expands her efforts to the farmer's market, discovering a new community and calling beyond her software engineering work.
