Stalking the Unicorn (Fables of Tonight)

Private investigator John Justin Mallory is struggling with personal and professional troubles on New Year's Eve when a new client arrives: Mürgenstürm the elf, whose unicorn has gone missing. If Mürgenstürm doesn't recover it by dawn, his guild will kill him. Mallory's investigation takes him through a hidden side of Manhattan populated by goblins, trolls, cat people, ghosts in the Stock Exchange, and gnomes in the subway. As Mallory navigates this fantastical world and its unusual rules, he discovers that a malevolent demon named Grundy is also searching for the unicorn. Grundy will stop at nothing to obtain it, and his success would endanger not only Mallory's client but others as well. The case blends hard-boiled detective work with fantasy elements and features crisp dialogue, an engaging protagonist, and distinctive supporting characters.
