About this book

This is the account of Jim Brigginshaw's experiences as a prisoner of war. After being captured by the Japanese following the fall of Singapore in 1942, Brigginshaw was sent to Burma to work on the Death Railway. Unlike many of his fellow prisoners, he survived this period. Brigginshaw was subsequently transferred to Nagasaki, Japan, where he was assigned to work in the mines of Sendryu. He describes conditions there as even harsher than those in Burma, though these circumstances ultimately contributed to his survival through the end of the war. On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped the second nuclear bomb on Nagasaki. Brigginshaw was underground in the mines at the time, but the book recounts the severe aftermath of the attack, including the violent shaking of the ground.
