About this book

This biography examines Sydney Camm, the pioneering aircraft designer whose work shaped Britain's aviation history. Born in 1893 as the eldest of twelve children and raised in modest circumstances, Camm left school at age 14 without formal technical education. Despite these limitations, he became one of the most significant figures in British aviation. Camm is best known for designing the Hawker Hurricane, the fighter plane credited with playing a crucial role during the Battle of Britain. A 1941 News Chronicle headline called him "This Man Saved Britain," and Lord Selborne, the Minister of Economic Warfare, told Winston Churchill that England owed Camm a great debt. His career spanned over fifty years, from biplane design in the 1920s through Cold War-era jet fighters. He also played a prominent role in developing the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, which saw action during the Falkland Island crisis and continues in service with the American armed forces decades after his death. Camm received knighthood in Britain and formal honors from France and the United States. He was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in San Diego.
