Perfect for you if...

  • You love folklore retellings that centre women's agency and desire, especially Scottish ballads or Celtic mythology brought to vivid life.
  • You're drawn to sensual, lyrical prose that doesn't shy away from the messy, morally grey choices women make to survive and love.
  • You want a story where the antagonist has her own devastating backstory, making the final confrontation feel earned rather than simple.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward good versus evil tales without moral ambiguity or complex villain motivations.
  • You're looking for light, feel-good romance without themes of sacrifice, loss, or the weight of impossible choices.
  • You want a fast-paced plot; this book lingers in lyrical language and memory, which some readers find slower than they'd like.

About this book

The Changeling Queen is a retelling of the Scottish "Ballad of Tam Lin" that weaves together folklore, desire, sacrifice, and nature. On Samhain in medieval Scotland, pregnant Janet rescues her lover Tam Lin from being sacrificed by the Wild Hunt. However, the Faery Queen is determined to continue her claim over Tam Lin's fate. Over the course of a single night, the Queen and Janet contest for his future. The narrative also traces the Faery Queen's origins. Before becoming royalty, she was Bess, the changeling daughter of a midwife, born with both magical and mortal blood. Uncertain of her place on either side of the veil, Bess found comfort with Thomas Shepherd, a bastard son of a local noble. Her cunning knowledge and dark gifts caught the attention of the elf lord Amadan, who drew her into Faery's realm of decadence. There, Bess faced a conflict between her heart and her destiny, struggling to keep both at great cost. The story explores themes of memory, betrayal, and redemption.
