After celebrated English author Gerald Candless dies of a heart attack at his clifftop home above Gaunton Dunes in Devon, his eldest daughter Sarah is commissioned to write his biography. Her father was generous, passionate, and talented, yet always mysterious. Sarah becomes puzzled by his distant relationship with her mother, his tendency to reinvent himself across his novels, his cryptic parlor games, and his claim to have no living relatives. As Sarah begins her research, she discovers that Gerald Candless was not her father's real name. This revelation launches her into an obsessive investigation that grows increasingly dark. Each uncovered lie leads to another, and Sarah's fear and fascination deepen as she realizes her father's life was constructed like a carefully plotted work of fiction.
