Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to speculative fiction that explores how communities rebuild after collapse, prioritising character and philosophy over action sequences.
  • You appreciate magical realism and surreal imagery woven through dystopian settings, similar to García Márquez's style.
  • You're interested in stories about resistance through creativity and culture rather than conventional warfare.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want fast-paced survival narratives with clear protagonists and antagonists; this novel is deliberately dreamlike and meditative.
  • You prefer military sci-fi or hard SF with technical worldbuilding; this focuses on art, community, and metaphor instead.
  • You expect traditional romance or character-driven plots; the story prioritises ideas and atmosphere over personal relationships.

About this book

A postapocalyptic novel set in San Francisco after a plague has wiped out most of the population. The survivors—painters, writers, and dreamers—have rebuilt the city as a society based on art, community, and peace. When a young woman named Jax arrives with disturbing news, the fragile community faces a threat. A general is moving across California, annexing cities and building his own version of America through force. He has set his sights on the Golden Gate Bridge, and his army will soon arrive with weapons and violence. Jax and her allies must defend their city using only their creativity and the spirit of a community that refuses to be dominated. The novel explores human nature and survival in a world transformed by catastrophe.
