Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by the 1996 Everest disaster but want to hear from someone who was actually there making split-second decisions in the dark.
  • You appreciate first-hand accounts that challenge the dominant narrative and offer a different perspective on what went wrong.
  • You're drawn to extreme mountaineering stories that balance technical detail with the raw human struggle at 29,000 feet.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer a single, definitive version of events rather than competing accounts of the same tragedy.
  • You're looking for a traditional narrative arc with clear heroes and villains rather than a messier, more ambiguous human story.
  • You haven't read Into Thin Air and have no interest in mountain climbing controversies or mountaineering disputes.

About this book

In May 1996, three expeditions attempted to climb Mount Everest via the Southeast Ridge route. Crowded conditions on the mountain slowed progress. Late in the day, twenty-three climbers—including expedition leaders Scott Fischer and Rob Hall—were caught in a severe blizzard. Disoriented and depleted of oxygen, they struggled to descend in darkness. Anatoli Boukreev, climbing alone, assisted climbers in their descent from life-threatening circumstances. This account by Boukreev and G. Weston DeWalt documents these events. The edition includes a transcript of the Mountain Madness expedition debriefing recorded five days after the tragedy, as well as DeWalt's response to Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air.
