About this book

A story about a small, declining Swedish town's effort to survive as it competes with a major city nearby. Julia Bäck, the district councillor of Halstaholm, sees an opportunity when Konrad Kaltenbacher Jr., owner of Traumbett—a successful German mattress company—considers expanding into Sweden. Hoping to bring 800 new jobs to her community, Julia launches a campaign to win his business. To impress Kaltenbacher, the town undertakes several rapid changes: a roundabout is renamed after Angela Merkel, a German school is established with unconventional leadership, and the long-empty swimming pool is converted into a beerhouse. Julia's efforts succeed in catching the German businessman's attention, but her actions create unforeseen complications for the town.
