Perfect for you if...

  • You want WWII history that reads like a thriller, with real stakes and a protagonist you can't stop rooting for.
  • You're fascinated by how individual courage operates in the face of systematic evil, especially when one person changes the outcome.
  • You appreciate Kershaw's narrative style and have read his other bestsellers about WWII's most pivotal moments.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need fictional drama and character development over historical fact, even if the facts here are extraordinary.
  • You're looking for a comprehensive Holocaust history rather than a tightly focused narrative about one man's actions.
  • You prefer lighter reading and aren't ready for the brutal details of Budapest's final Jewish ghetto and Auschwitz's machinery.

About this book

This true story recounts World War II heroism during the Holocaust, based on archives and extensive interviews with eyewitnesses and survivors. In December 1944, Soviet and German troops fight in the suburbs of Budapest while Hungarian fascists and Nazis systematically murder Jews, turning the Danube red. SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann has already sent over half a million Hungarians to the gas chambers at Auschwitz. Standing against him is Raoul Wallenberg, an unarmed Swedish diplomatic envoy. The Envoy tells how Wallenberg made an extraordinary difference against overwhelming evil. While Oscar Schindler saved hundreds, Wallenberg saved more than 100,000 Jewish men, women, and children from extermination. Written by Alex Kershaw, the book presents this account as a fast-paced narrative that brings to life one of the darkest and most inspiring chapters of twentieth century history.
