About this book

The Geek Way explores a new approach to accomplishing significant goals and transforming how people think about work, teams, projects, and culture. It provides insights and tools for leveraging human capacities for learning and cooperation. Being geeky means maintaining curiosity and willingness to tackle difficult problems with unconventional solutions. McAfee identifies four norms that geeks have built into their culture: science, ownership, speed, and openness. This approach differs from traditional hierarchies that defer to experts, prioritize planning, fear mistakes, or focus on winning. When all four norms operate together, a culture emerges that is freewheeling, fast-moving, egalitarian, evidence-driven, argumentative, and autonomous. McAfee explains why this approach succeeds: it activates humanity's core ability to cooperate intensely and learn rapidly. Drawing on cultural evolution research, he shows how the right conditions enable organizations to build reusable systems and self-correct, while wrong conditions produce bureaucracy, delays, and dysfunction. The book combines science, history, analysis, and real-world examples to present a new perspective and practical tools for seizing contemporary opportunities.
