About this book

The Good Soldiers is a chronicle of the 2-16 battalion, nicknamed the Rangers, an army infantry unit called to carry out the 2007 Iraq War surge announced by President George W. Bush in January. The young, optimistic soldiers were deployed to a vicious area of Baghdad, believing their presence would make a difference. Based on fifteen months of their deployment, David Finkel's account documents how the soldiers were forever changed by their tour. Finkel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, presents this as a story not only of the Iraq War but of all wars across time. The book serves as a prequel to Finkel's later work Thank You for Your Service.
