About this book

Nancy Roberts has been described as the "First Lady of American Folklore." Throughout her career, she documented supernatural experiences and interviewed hundreds of people about their encounters with the supernatural. Roberts began as a freelance writer for the Charlotte Observer. Encouraged by Carl Sandburg, who appreciated her stories and articles, she wrote her first book in 1958. Southern Living magazine called her a "custodian of the twilight zone." Roberts based her stories on interviews and her knowledge of American folklore, always grounding them in history. The American Association of State and Local History awarded her a certificate of commendation for her books on the Carolinas and Appalachia.
