About this book

Peter Wohlleben presents an account of forest ecosystems and the science behind how trees communicate, feel, and form social networks. The book draws on scientific discoveries to argue that forests function as social networks, with trees exhibiting behaviors similar to human families: they live together across generations, communicate with one another, support their young as they develop, share nutrients with struggling or sick trees, and alert each other to dangers. Wohlleben combines these findings with observations from his experience as a forester, describing the processes of life, death, and regeneration he has witnessed in woodlands. The book includes a note from forest scientist Dr. Suzanne Simard and was published in partnership with the David Suzuki Institute.
