Carey Duncan has worked as an assistant for home remodeling and design personalities Melissa and Rusty Tripp for nearly a decade, helping build their business from its earliest days. With a new show and book launching, the Tripps are approaching major success—but their relationship is deteriorating. James McCann, an MIT graduate and engineer, was hired as a structural engineer but finds the role unfulfilling. When both he and Carey are assigned to accompany the Tripps on a book tour to manage their public image, neither can afford to leave. Carey needs health insurance, while James has been promised a significant opportunity if he can maintain the couple's stability for a few more weeks. During a road trip up the West Coast, Carey and James agree to work together keeping their employers' problems private while protecting their own positions. As they collaborate, they begin to develop feelings for each other, raising the possibility of building something meaningful together while managing the chaos around them.
