About this book

In 1891, Maggie O'Halloran arrives in New York City with her brother Danny, hoping to leave her life in Ireland behind. When their father fails to meet them at the docks, the siblings find themselves homeless, penniless, and alone in the city. Struggling to survive on the Lower East Side, Maggie works toward her dream of opening her own millinery shop and achieving independence. She finds support in Brendan O'Donoghue, whose kindness offers her and Danny a sense of home. When Maggie secures work with a wealthy family on the Upper East Side, her dreams seem within reach. However, Danny becomes involved with a notorious New York gang, threatening everything Maggie has worked to build. She must decide whether she can save her brother and preserve the future she has fought so hard to create. The first book in the Maggie O'Halloran series, this novel follows one woman's struggle to change her circumstances in a new country.
