Perfect for you if...

  • You want to understand the hidden history behind Cold War foreign policy and why the US was willing to support mass atrocities abroad.
  • You're interested in how declassified documents and investigative journalism can expose state secrets that shaped modern geopolitics.
  • You read news about authoritarian regimes and wonder what role American intelligence played in their rise to power.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a balanced defence of US foreign policy or believe the Cold War was fought with clean hands.
  • You prefer narrative-driven storytelling over evidence-based historical analysis with extensive documentation.
  • You find detailed accounts of political killings and massacres too distressing to sit with for 300 pages.

About this book

This history examines U.S. involvement in mass killings of left-wing activists in Indonesia, Latin America, and other regions during the Cold War. In 1965, the U.S. government assisted the Indonesian military in killing approximately one million civilians, destroying the largest Communist Party outside China and the Soviet Union. This event inspired similar violence programs elsewhere. Vincent Bevins draws on declassified documents, archival research, and eyewitness accounts to document this global legacy. The book challenges the long-held narrative that the developing world transitioned peacefully into the U.S.-led capitalist system, arguing instead that the violent elimination of unarmed leftists was central to Washington's Cold War victory.
