Mickey Haller is a criminal defense attorney who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, traveling between Los Angeles courthouses to defend clients including bikers, con artists, drunk drivers, and drug dealers. For Haller, the law is rarely about guilt or innocence—it centers on negotiation and manipulation, and sometimes justice. When a Beverly Hills playboy arrested for attacking a woman he met in a bar hires Haller to defend him, Mickey gains his first high-paying client in years. The case appears to be a franchise case—a defense attorney's dream—and as evidence accumulates, Haller believes it may be the easiest case of his career. Then someone close to him is murdered. Haller discovers that his search for innocence has brought him face-to-face with pure evil. To survive, he must use every tactic, feint, and instinct at his disposal—this time to save his own life.
