About this book

In 1204 A.D., Theophilos, a jester and agent for the Fools' Guild, travels to Toulouse with his jester wife, infant daughter, and young apprentice. His assignment is to persuade the current Bishop to retire quietly so the Guild can install a more favorable replacement. Arriving shortly before Christmas, the group discovers the Bishop is in conflict with the town's moneylender. The day after the moneylender pressures the Bishop particularly hard, he is found dead in a tanner's vat. With his mission deadline approaching and the Guild's interests at stake, Theophilos must investigate what actually occurred the night the moneylender died.
