Perfect for you if...

  • You want to understand the Vietnam War from inside Vietnamese homes, through the eyes of those who lived it rather than those who studied it.
  • You loved Pachinko or Homegoing and crave sweeping family sagas rooted in specific cultural histories.
  • You appreciate novels that weave folklore, tradition, and language into their fabric—where the writing itself feels like a gift.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward, linear narratives without time jumps or multiple perspectives.
  • You're looking for a quick read. This book asks you to slow down and sit with grief and complexity.
  • You want a story centred on military strategy or political analysis rather than the intimate human toll of war.

About this book

The Mountains Sing tells a multigenerational story of the Trần family set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Trần Diệu Lan, born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North. Years later in Hà Nội, her young granddaughter Hương comes of age as her parents and uncles head down the Hồ Chí Minh Trail to fight in the conflict. The novel presents the human costs of the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese people, exploring how the conflict affected both the country and the family. It incorporates the language and traditions of Việt Nam throughout. This is Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai's first novel in English. It was a New York Times Editors' Choice Selection and won the 2020 Lannan Literary Awards Fellowship.
