A psychic fair comes to West London, and Gemma Doyle, owner of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, is persuaded by Donald Morris, an enthusiastic Sherlockian, to attend a séance. She brings along her best friend Jayne Wilson, a baker; Ashleigh, her store assistant; and Bunny Leigh, a former pop star. Gemma is unexpectedly barred from entering the séance room. Listening from outside, she hears the medium tell Donald that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will not be appearing. Moments later, she hears a voice cut off, a cry for help, and a scream. She rushes in to find someone dead on the table. All windows are locked, and Gemma was the only person guarding the door. With a murderer present in the sealed room, Gemma begins her investigation. She must determine whether the killer is a living person or something summoned from beyond.
