Perfect for you if...

  • You're curious about why you can't put down a good novel and want the science behind that pull.
  • You teach, write, or work in media and need to understand how stories actually influence people.
  • You've noticed patterns in your own behaviour after reading or watching something and want to know what's happening.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a book that tells you how to write better stories yourself, not why stories matter.
  • You're looking for narrative techniques or craft lessons rather than big-picture theory.
  • You prefer stories to analysis. This is a thinking book, not an escaping book.

About this book

Humans inhabit worlds of imagination, consuming novels, films, plays, and other narratives. Yet storytelling itself has remained largely unexplored. In this book, Jonathan Gottschall presents the first unified theory of storytelling, arguing that stories function like flight simulators—helping us navigate complex social problems and ensuring our survival through evolved behavior. Drawing on research in neuroscience, psychology, and evolutionary biology, Gottschall examines what it means to be a storytelling animal. He presents findings showing that absorption in a story changes behavior, that children across different environments act out similar narratives, and that people who read more fiction demonstrate greater empathy. However, storytelling has a darker dimension. It makes us susceptible to conspiracy theories, advertisements, and self-narratives that prioritize appeal over accuracy. National myths can prove dangerous—Hitler's ambitions were partly fueled by narrative. Yet stories also possess the power to improve the world. Most successful stories are moral, teaching how to live and binding communities around shared values. While humans are skilled storytellers, Gottschall reveals how stories ultimately shape us.
