About this book

The Testament of Yves Gundron is set in the village of Mandragora in an unnamed country. The novel opens with a depiction of harsh, rural life and daily labor in a pre-industrial medieval community. When Yves Gundron, a yeoman farmer, invents the harness, life in Mandragora begins to change irreversibly. However, appearances prove deceptive. The arrival of Ruth Blum, an anthropologist from Boston in the late twentieth century, reveals that what seemed to be a simple historical document is something far different. Through this debut novel, Emily Barton examines the dual nature of technological advancement and considers what has been lost and gained through the pursuit of modernity.
