Perfect for you if...

  • You care deeply about education policy and want fiction that grapples with real systemic problems in schools.
  • You love character-driven stories where ordinary people stand up to powerful forces threatening their community.
  • You're drawn to ensemble casts where different women's perspectives (teacher, journalist, newcomer) reveal layers of the same conflict.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven thrillers with high stakes and fast pacing; this is character and ideological conflict rather than external danger.
  • You want escapism rather than stories that wrestle with educational inequality and institutional corruption.
  • You dislike books heavy with workplace and policy details, even when they're woven into character arcs.

About this book

Julie Galloway, a teacher who has spent eighteen years at a failing school district, decides to speak out about how she and her colleagues are treated as expendable. When a wealthy stranger offers funding to Julie and first-year teacher Abby Baker to develop a charter school for Brookhaven's south side, it appears to be the support their community desperately needs. However, as journalist Becca Vanderbilt investigates why the district repeatedly breaks its promises—cutting budgets, allowing buildings to deteriorate, and reassigning teachers—Julie begins to suspect the stranger has ulterior motives for wanting Brookhaven's public schools to fail. The charter school may never open, and Julie's husband's job could be at risk because of her involvement. What begins as an opportunity becomes a struggle in which Julie, Abby, and Becca must each decide how much they are willing to sacrifice to protect their students, friendships, and community.
