In 1917 Thessaloniki, Greece, Dimitri Komninos is born as a devastating fire sweeps through the multicultural city. Five years later, young Katerina flees Asia Minor with Turkish forces advancing, losing her mother among refugees seeking passage to Greece. She arrives in Thessaloniki harbor, a stranger in an unfamiliar city. Over the next eighty years, Dimitri and Katerina's lives become intertwined as they navigate Nazi occupation, civil war, persecution, and economic collapse alongside their homeland's transformation. In 2007, a young Anglo-Greek hears his grandparents' remarkable story for the first time and faces a significant decision. For decades, Dimitri and Katerina have preserved treasures belonging to those forced to leave Thessaloniki. He must decide whether to stay and become their new custodian, continuing their legacy of safeguarding what others have lost.
