About this book

In 1937, a schoolteacher on the island of Maui challenged a group of impoverished children from sugar plantations to become Olympic swimmers. The children were Japanese-American, malnourished, and barefoot, with no pool to train in. Instead, they practiced in irrigation ditches that ran through the sugarcane fields where their families worked. Their teacher, Soichi Sakamoto, had minimal swimming ability himself. Despite facing severe obstacles, including widespread anti-Japanese sentiment in the late 1930s, the children achieved remarkable success. In their first year, they outpaced Olympic athletes twice their size. By their second year, they were national and international champions, breaking American and world records. In their third year, they were recognized as the world's greatest swimmers. However, the outbreak of World War II led to the cancellation of the Olympic Games. The children later became celebrated military heroes during the war. In 1948, they finally had another opportunity to compete for Olympic glory. This is the true story of the Three-Year Swim Club.
