The Truth Is in the Detours: A Novel

Two former childhood friends with a troubled history are forced together on a cross-country road trip. Ophelia Dahl discovers after her father's death that her mother, whom she believed died thirty years ago, actually abandoned her. Determined to find answers, Ophelia enlists the help of her neighbor. Beau Augustin, now an acclaimed author and Ophelia's former best friend turned teenage rival, is researching family deceptions for his current book project across the West Coast. Ophelia proposes a collaboration: Beau's book will follow her search for her mother. They set out in a Subaru to pursue the truth, but as they travel, it becomes clear that Beau's research carries personal stakes he hasn't fully disclosed. As they navigate detours, dead ends, and lingering resentments, both Ophelia and Beau move closer to uncovering their own truths and to reconnecting with each other.
