Conspiracies have shaped American society since its founding. The United States of Paranoia examines how these commonly held beliefs—whether true or false—have influenced the American cultural imagination. Using examples spanning from colonial times to the present, Jesse Walker argues that paranoia is not merely a fringe phenomenon but central to American identity. Walker does not attempt to prove or disprove specific theories. Instead, he synthesizes archival research to explore national myths, organizing them into five categories: The Enemy Outside, The Enemy Within, The Enemy Above, The Enemy Below, and The Benevolent Conspiracy. Drawing on examples from J. Edgar Hoover's FBI and Watergate to the "Matrix" phenomenon and the Birthers, he demonstrates how these myths have shaped American views of government and society. Walker also identifies a growing subculture focused not on individual conspiracy theories but on the conspiracy phenomenon itself. He argues this obsession reveals something fundamental about American identity.
