Perfect for you if...

  • You love multi-generational stories about female friendship that span decades and show how women shape each other's lives.
  • You're drawn to literary fiction with book clubs, writing, and the dynamics of women finding their voices during social upheaval.
  • You appreciate narratives set in 1960s California that balance humour with genuine emotional stakes.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with high stakes or dramatic twists; this is character-driven and domestic in scope.
  • You're looking for romance or romantic tension as a central thread rather than as one strand among many.
  • You want books that question or critique the nuclear family rather than celebrate female bonds within traditional structures.

About this book

Five women—Frankie, Linda, Kath, Brett, and Ally—meet every Wednesday at a park near their homes in Palo Alto, California, beginning in 1967. Initially defined by their roles as homemakers and mothers, they seem to have little in common: Frankie is a timid transplant from Chicago, Linda is a blunt athlete, Kath is a Kentucky debutante, Ally is quiet with a secret, and Brett is quirky and intelligent. They bond over a shared love of literature, including works by Fitzgerald, Eliot, Austen, du Maurier, Plath, and Dickens, and watch the Miss America Pageant together each year. Over thirty-five years, the group forms a writers circle to express themselves through poems, stories, and eventually books. As their children grow and history unfolds around them—Vietnam, the moon landing, and the women's movement—they support one another through personal challenges including infidelity, longing, illness, failure, and success. The novel explores how these five women redefine what family means through their enduring friendship.
