Perfect for you if...

  • You remember the early '90s as a time of possibility and chaos, and you're nostalgic for New York before it became polished and expensive.
  • You've written something terrible and kept it anyway, or you know someone who has, and you find that combination of ambition and delusion oddly moving.
  • You liked Nick Hornby's self-deprecating humour and Douglas Coupland's cultural snapshots, and you want that same energy in a novel set during actual economic collapse.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven narratives with clear arcs and resolutions, because this is more about the mess of living than reaching destination.
  • You're looking for an aspirational success story about making it in New York, because this book is funnier about failure.
  • You want your comedy broad and your characters sympathetic, because Rapp's humour is sharp and his protagonist is often his own worst enemy.

About this book

Set in New York City during the early 1990s recession, this novel follows a young Midwestern man navigating life in a city where abandoned buildings house squatters in the East Village and homelessness dominates public spaces. The Internet has not yet become part of daily life, and the term "dot-com" does not yet exist. The protagonist works a low-wage corporate job while writing his first novel about acute knee pain and the end of the world. Adam Rapp, an acclaimed playwright and finalist for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, presents a chronicle that explores love, sex, roommate dynamics, and the realization that life may not proceed as planned. The narrative combines humor with the experiences of a young man trying to establish himself amid economic uncertainty and personal ambition.
