They Went Left

Germany, 1945. Eighteen-year-old Zofia Lederman has just been liberated from the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, but the war's end brings no relief. Three years earlier, she and her younger brother Abek were separated from the rest of their family at Auschwitz-Birkenau—sent to the right while their parents, grandmother, and aunt were sent to the left, to the gas chambers. Her last promise to Abek was simple: when they reunite, they will fill their alphabet together, from A to Z. Zofia's search for her brother takes her through Poland and Germany into a displaced persons camp, where she meets others rebuilding their lives from trauma and loss: Miriam, searching for a twin sister after surviving medical experimentation; Breine, a former heiress planning a wedding; and Josef, a magnetic figure guarding secrets behind a wall of silence. As Zofia digs deeper into her search, the task seems increasingly impossible. How can she find one boy among so many missing?
