Perfect for you if...

  • You love multigenerational sagas rooted in specific places and cultures, especially stories that weave magic and superstition into deeply human dramas.
  • You're drawn to complex female characters who survive impossible circumstances through grit and cleverness, not perfection.
  • You appreciate historical fiction that captures sensory details: the food, music, and rhythm of a real community rather than treating the setting as backdrop.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with clear resolutions; this book lingers on emotional consequence and ambiguity.
  • You're looking for a straightforward love story; the romance here is entangled with family trauma, secrets, and generational damage.
  • You need constant action or plot twists; the tension builds slowly through character revelation and historical upheaval.

About this book

'Til the Well Runs Dry follows Marcia Garcia, a sixteen-year-old seamstress living in a seaside village in northern Trinidad, who raises two small boys while guarding a family secret. When she meets Farouk Karam, an ambitious young policeman who seeks help from an obeah woman to win her affection, the stakes in Marcia's life change dramatically. The novel traces Marcia and Farouk's relationship from their passionate courtship through personal and historical events that threaten to expose Marcia's secret, create scandal for the couple and their children, and jeopardize their future. Set across the 1940s to 1960s in Trinidad and the United States, the story explores a woman's love for a man, a mother's love for her children, and a people's connection to an island defined by calypso, Carnival, cricket, and its distinctive culture and cuisine.
