Perfect for you if...

  • You love quiet, strange characters who contain unexpected depths and philosophical richness.
  • You appreciate short novels that say more in 83 pages than most books manage in 300.
  • You're drawn to Eastern European literature and fables about why books matter.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want plot momentum and narrative drive; this is meditative and circular, not propulsive.
  • You need likeable protagonists; Haňtá is eccentric and flawed in ways that won't charm everyone.
  • You prefer realistic contemporary settings; this has a timeless, almost allegorical quality.

About this book

A fable about the power of books and knowledge from one of Czechoslovakia's most popular authors. The novel was named a New York Times Notable Book. Haňtá has worked as a trash compactor for thirty-five years. Each evening, he rescues books from his hydraulic press, takes them home, and fills his house with them. Though his boss considers him an idiot, Haňtá possesses an unusual ability to quote from the Talmud, Hegel, and Lao-Tzu. The story celebrates the power and indestructibility of the written word, balancing pathos and comedy throughout.
