Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by Civil War military strategy and want to understand the decisions that actually shifted the balance of power.
  • You appreciate meticulously researched history that fills genuine gaps in the historical record, not just rehashing the famous battles.
  • You enjoy operational histories that show how commanders manoeuvre armies across terrain, not just the body counts from big fights.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a narrative-driven account heavy on personal stories and character drama rather than tactical analysis.
  • You want a quick overview of the Civil War and aren't prepared to sit with the granular details of a single twelve-day campaign.
  • You prefer histories that focus on the Eastern Theatre and the Army of the Potomac.

About this book

In June and July 1863, Union Major General William S. Rosecrans led the Army of the Cumberland in a campaign through Middle Tennessee that drove Confederate General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee from the region. Though militarily significant and nearly bloodless, this campaign was overshadowed by concurrent news of the battles at Gettysburg and Vicksburg and remains largely unknown to modern readers. David A. Powell and Eric J. Wittenberg examine this overlooked operation in detail, drawing on hundreds of archival sources and firsthand accounts. The Tullahoma Campaign set in motion subsequent major events: the Battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga, the removal of both Rosecrans and Bragg from command, U.S. Grant's elevation to lead all Union armies, and the beginning of William T. Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. The authors argue that this skillfully executed campaign was pivotal to Union success in the Western Theater during 1863 and beyond.
