Perfect for you if...

  • You want a survival story that doesn't feel like fiction, told with the narrative momentum of a thriller.
  • You're drawn to underdog tales where grit and humour matter as much as luck.
  • You appreciate meticulously researched history that centres one person's extraordinary resilience.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need to avoid detailed descriptions of violence, torture, and wartime brutality.

  • You're looking for a feel-good story with an easy resolution, rather than a hard-won redemption arc.

About this book

Unbroken tells the true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner whose life took a dramatic turn during World War II. As a teenager, Zamperini channeled his rebellious nature into running, developing exceptional talent that earned him a place at the Berlin Olympics. When war began, he became an Army Air Forces airman. After his bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, Zamperini survived against the odds. He endured thousands of miles of open ocean, encounters with sharks, a failing raft, thirst, starvation, enemy aircraft, and subsequent imprisonment. Throughout these ordeals, he responded to desperation with ingenuity, suffering with hope and humor, and brutality with rebellion. Upon returning home after the war, Zamperini faced a different struggle: PTSD, trauma from his experiences, and the challenge of moving forward. A significant encounter with reverend Billy Graham set him on a path toward redemption. The book chronicles Zamperini's journey through extreme circumstances and his path to recovery, exploring the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.
