About this book

Commissario Guido Brunetti is asked by his father-in-law to investigate an elderly man named Gonzalo Rodríguez de Tejeda's plan to adopt a much younger man as his son. Under Italian inheritance laws, this would make the younger man heir to Gonzalo's entire fortune, which troubles Gonzalo's friends. Brunetti is uncertain about intervening in what appears to be the old man's personal choice. When Gonzalo suddenly dies on a Venice street, followed by the strangulation of one of his friends who arrived for the memorial service, Brunetti finds himself with an urgent case to solve. He works to uncover a long-hidden mystery from Gonzalo's past that has led to murder, though the resolution brings him more pain than satisfaction. The novel is set in Venice and explores themes of inheritance, friendship, and hidden secrets beneath seemingly innocent circumstances.
