About this book

Uranium Frenzy traces the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission's urgent need for uranium ore in the 1950s and the resulting search across the American West. Now expanded to include nuclear testing and its consequences, the book documents the uranium rush that swept the Colorado Plateau region in the 1950s. Driven by government demand for atomic weapons fuel and sparked by Charlie Steen's profitable Mi Vida strike in 1952, the boom attracted prospectors from diverse backgrounds and was fueled by penny stock speculation. The rush created a vibrant era in the Four Corners region and Salt Lake City, though it ultimately collapsed. The book examines both the excitement of the boom and its darker consequences. Miners received little information about the dangers of radioactive decay and received minimal protection or health education from the government or others. Radiation exposure in poorly ventilated mines caused illness and death over time. The uranium story connects to broader atomic weapons testing in the western United States. Nuclear explosions at the Nevada Test Site affected downwinders in radiation paths, military observers, and Navajo and other uranium mill workers, resulting in elevated cancer and radiation-related disease rates. The book addresses radioactive waste from mines, mills, and the nuclear industry, along with subsequent legal battles and congressional compensation efforts for victims, which have remained inadequately funded.
