About this book

The VW Beetle is the best-known and most-loved car in automotive history. Some of the earliest Beetles, now seven decades old, remain in use, while examples from the late 1950s and 1960s are highly valued by enthusiasts. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the Beetle was brought toward series production under Nazi Germany, then rescued from obscurity by the British after World War II. Under Heinz Nordhoff's leadership as VW boss for two decades, the car became a global phenomenon, achieving overwhelming success in over 150 countries, particularly in the USA. After Nordhoff's death, the Beetle declined in Europe but experienced a revitalized period of production in South America. This book traces the Beetle's history from its origins through its evolution as a cultural and commercial force.
